Introduction
EVI is an iOS app that generates personalized reading stories based on reading level, interests, and preferences. The app is designed for children, parents/guardians, and education professionals who want calm, accessible, level-appropriate reading practice.
Because EVI may be used with children, we design the app around data minimization. This policy explains what data the app processes, how that data is used, and what choices you have.
Data we process
- User-provided data: the child’s name or nickname if entered, age or grade, AVI level or reading level, interests, topic, tone, and story preferences.
- Generated content: stories, questions, vocabulary lists, illustrations where available, and saved stories in the library.
- App preferences: language/market settings, dyslexia-friendly font, text size, display preferences, and other reading settings.
- In-app usage data: generated story counts and limits needed for free use or subscriptions.
- Device data: app version, device model, iOS version, crash logs, and diagnostics if shared through Apple.
- Account and purchases: subscription status and transactions are processed by Apple. We do not receive your full payment details.
Storage and sync
- Local storage: stories and settings are stored on your device.
- Optional iCloud sync: EVI can sync your library and settings through iCloud across your own Apple devices. You can turn sync on or off in the app.
- When iCloud sync is on, synced app data is processed through Apple’s iCloud services and associated with your Apple ID. We use iCloud only to make your app data available across your devices.
- When iCloud sync is off, new changes remain local to the device where you use the app. Turning sync off does not automatically delete data that was previously synced to iCloud.
- Exports: when you export, email, print, or share a story as a PDF, the file leaves your device only through your action.
AI generation
- EVI uses AI to generate reading stories. Depending on availability, this may happen through Apple Foundation Models on device or through an external AI provider/gateway such as OpenRouter.
- For external AI generation, prompt content may be sent, such as reading level, topic, interests, name/nickname if entered, tone, and relevant story preferences.
- We do not send payment details, advertising IDs, or unnecessary account details to AI providers.
- Do not enter sensitive personal data that is not needed for the story.
- AI output can contain mistakes. Parents, guardians, or teachers remain responsible for reviewing stories before using them with children.
What we do not do
- We do not sell personal data.
- We do not show ads.
- We do not use third-party tracking SDKs.
- We do not use HealthKit.
- We do not use remote push notifications for marketing.
How we use data
- To generate and display stories.
- To store stories, preferences, and usage limits locally.
- To sync stories and settings through iCloud when you enable that option.
- To verify subscriptions and access to Pro features through Apple.
- To investigate bugs and improve reliability when diagnostics are available through Apple.
- To provide support when you contact us and choose to share information.
Children and adult guidance
EVI may be used by children, but it is intended to be used under the guidance of a parent, guardian, or education professional. The adult setting up or using the app is responsible for what data is entered and shared.
Contact info@graimatter.nl if you have questions about a child’s data, or if you want to request access, correction, or deletion.
Your choices and rights
- You can delete local data by deleting stories in the app or removing the app from the device.
- You can turn iCloud sync on or off in the app. iCloud and Apple ID management are handled through Apple.
- You can manage exported files wherever you save or share them.
- You can manage subscriptions through iOS Settings -> Apple ID -> Subscriptions.
- EU/UK residents (GDPR): rights to access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection. Contact info@graimatter.nl.
- California residents (CCPA/CPRA): where applicable, rights to know, delete, correct, and non-discrimination. We do not sell personal data.
Legal bases (GDPR)
- Contract: to provide the app functionality you request.
- Legitimate interest: security, fraud prevention, diagnostics, and reliability improvements.
- Consent: where the app explicitly asks permission, such as for optional features or system permissions.
- Parent/guardian: when the app is used for a child, we assume use is guided by a parent, guardian, or authorized education professional.
Retention
- Local stories and preferences remain until you delete them or remove the app.
- Data synced through iCloud remains available through iCloud until you delete it or Apple manages it according to your iCloud settings.
- Export files remain wherever you save or share them.
- Apple determines retention periods for App Store transactions, TestFlight, and crash diagnostics.
- External AI providers may temporarily process or retain requests under their own terms. We limit sent content to what is needed for generation.
Third parties
- Apple: App Store, TestFlight, StoreKit, iCloud, crash diagnostics, and platform services.
- OpenRouter and underlying model providers: only when external AI generation is used.
- Mail or sharing apps: only when you send an export or support email.
International transfers
Apple and external AI providers may process data on infrastructure outside the Netherlands or the European Economic Area. Where possible, we limit what is shared and avoid unnecessary direct identifiers.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as EVI changes. The “Last updated” date will be adjusted. For material changes, we may also notify users in the app or release notes.
