Problem in real life
Many children practice better when a text matches both their reading level and their world. In practice, that is hard: existing practice material is often too difficult, too easy, not personal enough, or wrapped in noisy reward mechanics.
EVI is built for guided reading. The app helps a parent, guardian, teacher, or education professional quickly create a calm practice story that matches AVI level, topic, and preferences.
For whom
EVI is designed for:
- Children aged 6 to 12 who need extra reading practice
- Children with reading difficulties or dyslexia
- Children learning Dutch as a second language
- Parents and guardians practicing at home
- Teachers, remedial teachers, libraries, and language centers
Solution
EVI creates personalized practice stories for guided reading:
- Choose an AVI level, topic, and preferences.
- EVI generates a story with attention to readability, motivation, and accessibility.
- The interface stays calm, without ads or distracting rewards.
- Stories can be saved in a library.
- Optional iCloud sync keeps stories and settings available across your own Apple devices.
- PDF export, printing, and sharing make practice possible away from the screen.
Technical features:
- Native SwiftUI iOS app
- Online AI generation through OpenRouter as the primary production route
- Optional local Apple Foundation Models generation as a beta setting on supported iOS 26+ devices
- AVI level rules and validation
- StoreKit subscriptions and restore purchases
- Optional iCloud sync that users can turn on or off in the app
- Dyslexia-friendly font, adjustable text size, and VoiceOver support
Live in the App Store
EVI has been approved by Apple and is live on the App Store. The first release supports the complete core flow: generating a story, reading it, saving it to the library, turning iCloud sync on or off, exporting a PDF, and using any subscription or restore flow.
The App Store version is intended for guided use by parents, guardians, teachers, and education professionals. Because EVI uses AI, stories should still be reviewed before using them with children.
Social impact
EVI aims to make reading practice more accessible and less frustrating. Not by turning reading into a game, but by making better-fitting material faster to create for the adults who guide children.
Intended impact:
- More reading motivation through stories that match level and interests
- Less search time for parents and education professionals
- Calm digital support without ads or tracking
- A low-friction base experience for starting guided reading
Accessibility & inclusion
EVI is designed with children and accessibility in mind:
- Calm screens with clear hierarchy
- Large, readable typography
- Dyslexia-friendly font
- Adjustable text size
- VoiceOver support
- Contrasts suited to accessible use
Privacy & ethics
Children and AI require care:
- EVI shows no ads and uses no third-party tracking SDKs.
- Stories and settings are stored locally, with optional iCloud sync when the user enables it.
- External AI generation uses only the content needed to create a story, such as reading level, topic, preferences, and optionally a name or nickname.
- Users are encouraged not to enter sensitive personal data.
- AI-generated stories may contain mistakes; review stories before using them with children.
- EVI is intended for use under guidance from a parent, guardian, teacher, or education professional.

Now that EVI is live, feedback remains valuable. I am looking to connect with parents, education professionals, libraries, and language centers who want to think along about fitting reading material, accessibility, and pilot distribution.
